The Roman Forum:
"Why should lasting values tremble if transient things fall?”
(Prosper of Aquitaine)

August 28, 2020: Feast of St. Augustine

“This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.”
(T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men)

“In the world you shall have distress. But have confidence. I have overcome the world.“
(John 16:33)
--------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends of the Roman Forum,

“Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad”.

Our entire secularized but formerly glorious Christian civilization has gone stark raving mad, and deserves whatever fate lies in store for it for having abandoned God. Since it has lost its Faith it has also lost its Reason, proclaiming absolute nonsense as unquestionable, infallible, scientific wisdom.

At least we Catholics can take consolation in the fact that we have been provided by our robotic opponents with a “Galileo Case” that they will never be able to live down: when - and if - our brain dead civilization ever does regain its sanity. And Christ will, of course, triumph over an arrogant, modern, “enlightened” world, now seemingly ending with a pathetic whimper regarding not a Bubonic Plague but an admittedly tragic flu that nevertheless has mercifully left 99% of mankind quite intact.

Given everyone’s justifiable focus on the electoral drama, and given also the great uncertainty surrounding a crisis being manipulated by a variety of what I can only label terrorist organizations - whose crimes cry out to heaven for a new set of Nuremberg Trials to punish - this Roman Forum information letter will be very brief.

If the borders are reopened and conditions permit our proper use of the parish church of Gardone Riviera, our 28th Annual Summer Symposium dealing with The Traditionalist Movement: Its Origins, Its Manifold Ramifications, Its Divisions, and its Enemies, planned for 2020, will take place in the summer of 2021. Further information and exact dates will be provided as we become more secure about the future.

The last four years of our New York City Church History Lectures may be found for free on the Internet by calling up The Roman Forum at Sound Cloud. As already mentioned in the past, our hope is eventually to redo all of the previous lectures of this present cycle of the history program - some 450 conferences in total - and make them similarly available to interested listeners. Meanwhile, the tentative schedule for the 2020-2021 New York City Church History Lectures, The End of the Modern World: From the “Purifying War” to Danger on All Fronts (1914-1945), is pasted below.

We are obviously grateful to those still capable of offering us tax-deductible donations in these difficult days. Donations can be made either through PayPal on our website or by checks made out to the Roman Forum and mailed to the address indicated above. All donors are remembered in the monthly Traditional Mass said on their behalf, offered by our chaplain, Rev. Dr. Richard A. Munkelt. And all of you are always in our daily prayers.

Viva Cristo Rey!

The Shifty Pope

Pope Francis' Political Plea:

In this era, when popes become politicians, and enter the worship houses of alien religions, Pope Francis sent this "request" to the Ethiopians and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam:
Pope Francis on Saturday called for dialogue between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, urging them not to let a dispute over a dam on the Nile lead to conflict.

"I invite all parties involved to continue on the path of dialogue so that the eternal river will continue to be a source of life, which unites and does not divide, which nurtures friendship, prosperity and fraternity and not enmity, misunderstanding and conflict," [Source]
Video from the Vatican, Pope Francis' entry into the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam politics, starting at the 12 minutes 40 seconds point:

Pope Francis gave this political plea during his Angelus message for Assumption Day, the most important Catholic feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Council of European Canadians and Their Can of Worms

The Council of European Canadians just opened a can of worms. LOL.

But it is more than that. Many "white nationalist" groups are actually a-Christian, if not anti-Christian.

What a wonderful way to support, and promulgate, the West (sarcasm alert).

Felician Sisters, Mississauga

Felician Sisters, Mississauga

We drive by a long, slightly winding driveway. The last time we drove by it, I managed to write down the nearest number to the road: 2185 Mississauga Road.

On Google Map, the Felician Sisters is located near this area, and looking them up, they are at 2165 Mississauga Rd.

Most of these side roads show homes on either side, but this one has an intriguing absence of anything but the trail and tall trees on either side.

Here is a little background on this convent (text below from mississauga.ca, and images screenshots from google map):
2165 Mississauga Road North. Range 3, CIR, pt. Lot 10.

This is a two-and-a-half storey structure built as an English country estate in English Tudor Manor style. It was designed by architects George and Moorhouse in 1938 and originally known as the William George Dean residence. (William George Dean was a director of Eaton's.) The building later became a convent for the Felician Sisters of St. Francis Canada. It is not visible from the road. There is a carriage house attached to the east side and a modern addition to the west. There was a small cemetery on the property where about seven of the sisters were buried. Sometime before 2004 six of the sisters' bodies were moved, without the knowledge of the Registrar of Cemeteries, and reinterred in Assumption Cemetery. It is possible that there are still some burials on the property. The property is listed on the Heritage Register. Description as of July 2018.

Michelle Malkin Presidential Campaign on Social Distancing
(Not a Brimelow Joke)

Malkin as the Socially Distant President
Video here

The screen shot above is from the video conversation between Michelle Malkin and Peter Brimelow, who is doing a series of these live streams. I commented on one between Brimelow and Derbyshire, where Brimelow made a joke (flat and inconsequential) on "social distancing."

The title to the image comes from Brimelow's suggestion to Malkin (around the 50 second mark):
Brimelow: ...my definition of a Civic Nationalist: Someone who's willing to vote for Michelle Malkin for President when she runs on a platform of immigration moratorium...So, tell us, when are you going to declare, Michelle?
Malkin: The prospect of me going back to Washingtonian in any form is really not attractive to me at all...
Brimelow: Social Distancing. It can be a socially distant president..."
The generally abrasive, and constantly angry, Michelle Malkin, about whom I wrote on May 15 on her reaction to the COVID-SCAM, has done her one-on-one with VDare's Peter Brimelow.

In my May 15 article on Malkin, I was trying to figure out her definitive position on the COVID-SCAM. I concluded that her commentary was inconclusive:
In any case, as usual with our off-Main-Stream-Media, they cannot make up their minds, or more precisely, cannot come up with their own data analyses and conclusions that COVID is not much to write about other than to compare it with other phenomena, such as immigration.
Earlier on, in my commentary on the Brimelow-Derbyshire video conversation, I speculate if VDare and their followers actually want the social, financial, and cultural ruin of our West, and the world over, really, a "global Gotterdammerung, to start their America on a clean, white slate.":
The discussion between Derbyshire and Brimelow centered around black crimes on whites, which is the repetitive, mantra-like, redundant postings through which VDare has made its trademark, over the couple of decades it has existed.

I have to speculate whether it is something that they wish for, some kind of racial war, to start the machinations of a global Gotterdammerung, to start their America on a clean, white slate.

The populations that are suffering due to this "pandemic" at much higher levels are the poor, mostly black and other "people of color," although not due to illness or death, but through financial loss of jobs and savings.
Near the end of the interview, the Brimelow-Malkin discussion does touch upon the COVID-SCAM social, cultural, and financial upheaval, but wraps it around immigration control, the scamdemic being a useful tool to start closing off and monitoring that porous border.
Brimelow: I really think that's what's happening with social distancing now. We're going to have to get used to all these epidemic diseases coming in because apparently it won't stop immigration from the Third World.

When I wrote Alien Nation I said I thought immigration was the wild card that would get immigration to public debate. But in fact, it turned out to be terrorism and they had to tell a lot of lies to suppress that problem. Now they're going to tell a lot of lies about a disease. But this is like at least the third wave of diseases that have come in since Alien Nation (Brimelow's 19... book) was written..

[...]

But the thing is social distancing...i like price and wage control. Massive overkill to what's going on...I think. Does that make sense to you?

Malkin: Yeah, absolutely, and I alluded to this in my column today at VDare [KPA:...I posted on it here] and this paradox of the government both overreacting and under-reacting.

Brimelow. Part of the problem is that they just won't be frank about it. For two months, three months, we've been writing about the disease, the racial issue...the racial differences in susceptibility.

[...]

And then quite suddenly in the past week, it has been politically correct to write about it, because it turns out that American blacks were unusually susceptible. And therefore it is useful to for basically guilting out the whites again.

And near the very end, the "Pandemic" gets a fleeting mention by Malkin, in relation of course to immigration ....

Malkin
: But when the pandemic dies down, (if it dies down), that he's [Trump's] intent on pushing congress to pass the DACA deal after the Supreme Court.
So what if a disproportionate number of American citizens who are black (and brown - how about that, Michelle M., but what does she have to worry, with her Jewish/"white" husband) are in danger of the social and financial consequences of this disease. Our whole purpose is to support and represent the white race.

In fact, so what if a substantial number of poor whites are also affected by this scamdemic. Our purpose is "America First!"

When principle becomes subordinate to purpose, then anything goes.

Once again, the discussion between Brimelow and Malkin hardly touches the COVID-SCAM, and the effusive Malkin, bestowed with Brimelow's praise, and encouragement, on her battle for America, seems to be on the road to the Presidency, or at least start off with a Mayorship for Colorado Springs, CO, as she coyly defers from discussing with her protege Brimelow.

I have to add, the "conservative" Malkin, who dresses anything but conservatively, presents herself thus at a recent presentation in 2019 at the annual Western Conservative Summit, in 2019.

By the way, it was really difficult to find out the topic of Malkin's presentation, let alone the title. It is as though we should blindly accept that whatever these "immigration" critics say or write about is sacrosanct, and needs no more than their names. I believe Malkin was simply a "guest speaker" during a luncheon session, according to this schedule.

And Malkin, whose husband is Jewish, and who is purportedly Filipino Catholic, has two children, whom she raises as... what?

It is the usual story of contemporary conservatives, usually in some grip with Jewish influence, without a Christian spiritual principle to guide their ways, as I wrote here, here, and here, amongst many other posts, who use their pent up energy to deflect the issues towards other "pressing" items, like black crime, and of course, immigration, as America, Canada, and the West are being destroyed by a fake disease, which NONE of them have brought up in their copious interviews and discussions.

So, it bears repeating, as I have done in several of my recent blogs, on this absence of intelligent commentary on the scamdemic:
I have to speculate whether it is something that they wish for, some kind of racial war, to start the machinations of a global Gotterdammerung, to start their America on a clean, white slate.
Hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Mercer and Derbyshire have found each other:
Dialogue Between Two Atheists

John Derbyshire, writing as Bradlaugh at Secular Right, commenting on Ilana Mercer's Your Godless Government At Work.
This got me thinking about theology. What’s it for ? It’s obviously tribal in essence, though you have to extend the meaning of “tribal” to include “fictive tribes” like Christianity and Islam. (Well, I think you do.) Any given theology is of zero interest to anyone outside the tribe. If someone tells you he’s making a deep study of Rabbinic Literature, you can be 99 percent sure he’s Orthodox-Jewish; if deep in Thomism, he’s Roman Catholic; etc.
[...]

It’s all just tribal chanting.

[...]

I don’t really have a conclusion here. I’m just thinking out loud. And trying to get Ilana’s attention.
Well that got Ilana M.'s attention alright:

Mercer rebuts:
As one of the few intellectually honest, brilliant, paleo-conservatives around, Derb, naturally, always has my attention. (There are quite a few brilliant paleos, but not all are intellectually honest.)
[KPA: There is the indomitable Ilana tooting her own horn, at the slightest opportunity. Although I should be careful with that "indomitable" (= "impossible to subdue"].
Continues Mercer:
A couple of comments from one secular rightist (me) to another (Derb): Although not religious, I’m a defender of the so-called Judeo-Christian tradition. I’m not hostile to religion...
And
I’m of a generation of secular Jews which knows and loves the Hebrew Bible as a tremendous literary, philosophical, and historical achievement.
I commented on this "conversation" in my Camera Lucida blog: Defence of the Judeo-Christian Tradition by Atheists:
It is unprecedented that people come outright and say "I am not religious." Previous generations wouldn't even know how to articulate these thoughts. What is even more irritating is the "but" that many of these people add. "Although not religious, I’m a defender of the so-called Judeo-Christian tradition." What does that even mean? As in "I will abstain from participating in one important element of Western tradition, but I will support it anyway?"

People can be overwhelmed by the beauty and poetics of the Bible, just as one can admire the poetry of Shakespeare. But, how can they, if they are so drawn to this book, not feel the mystery and transcendence of it as well? Where does that "tremendous literary achievement" lead to? Just for us to feel its tremendous literary achievement? Isn't there just something a little more than that?

Such is the ways of our modern world, where atheists sit around talking about the literary achievements of the Bible, as though they are great connoisseurs, and yet not have an ounce of reaction to its bigger picture.

Mercer goes on to quote Paul Johnson, who says:
The Bible is essentially a historical work from start to finish. The Jews developed the power to write terse and dramatic historical narrative half a millennium before the Greeks.
Yes, like the literary achievement, there is no doubt about its historicity as well. But, as usual, these "reasoned" intellectuals go around in circles.

It reminds me of people who endlessly talk about the great champagne they had, or the wonderful cheese you can buy at that high scale market, and who are so engrossed in their ability to discern such wonderful foods.

The Bible seems like such an exercise.

The Old Testament is a historical book. But the New Testament has an odd sense of ahistoricity about it. It is almost as though history has come to an end, or has reached its conclusion. Which is of course what Christ's story is all about; the long line of Jewish history, miracles and prophecy, which produced the Son of God, who became the salvation of mankind.

If the Bible (Old and New) were simply a historical document, then what would they make of the New Testament section of that Bible?

Faberge Eggs: Just in Time for Easter

This is a post from my Camera Lucida blog (2005-2013) posted on April 12, 2011.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rose Trellis Fabergé Egg was acquired by
American businessman Henry Walters in 1930,
and is now at theWalters Art Museum in Baltimore.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fabergé eggs were made between 1885 and 1917, and:
[W]ere designed primarily at the behest of Russian Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II as annual Easter gifts for Tsarinas Maria and Alexandra.
This is the Easter gift that Tzar Alexander III gave Tzarina Maria Fedorovna in 1885, which also marked their twentieth wedding anniversary:
Easter is the most joyful celebration of the Orthodox faith in Russia. After the devout church services, families gather to exchange gifts of decorated eggs, symbols of renewed life and hope. The Easter of 1885 also marks the twentieth anniversary of Czar Alexander III and Czarina Maria Fedorovna, and the Czar needs an exceptional gift for his wife.

So he places an order with a young jeweler, Peter Carl Fabergé, whose beautiful creations have recently caught Maria's eye.

On Easter morning, Fabergé delivers to the palace what appears to be a simple enameled egg. But to the delight of the Empress, inside is a golden yolk; within the yolk is a golden hen; and concealed within the hen is a diamond miniature of the royal crown and a tiny ruby egg – both now lost to history.
Here is what the Walters Art Museum says about the (above) Rose Trellis egg:
On April 22, 1907 [on Easter], Tsar Nicholas II presented this egg to his wife, Alexandra Fedorovna, to commemorate the birth of the tsarevich, Alexei Nicholaievich, three years earlier. Because of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, no Imperial Easter eggs had been produced for two years. The egg contained as a surprise a diamond necklace and an ivory miniature portrait of the tsarevich framed in diamonds (now lost). Fabergé's invoice, dated April 21, 1907, listed the egg at 8,300 rubles.
Many Fabergé eggs were either sold or taken out of Russia during the Russian revolution. Eight eggs are lost. Ten are now on display in the Kermlin Armory Museum. Sotheby's put up nine eggs for auction in 2004, and the entire collection went (back) to Russia, purchased by Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg.

Happy Easter!

Three Wise Men in the Modern World

The Adoration of the Magi
Copy woven 1894 for the Corporation of Manchester
Designed by Edward Burne Jones with details by William Morris and John Henry Dearle
The Adoration of the Magi, tapestry, wool and silk on cotton warp, 101 1/8 x 151 1/4 inches
Manchester Metropolitan University

E. Michael Jones is referring to the Three Wise Men as "The Three Wise Persians."

This is both biblically and historically incorrect.

It appears that Jones' insistence on the Persian origin of ALL the magi may be to give credence to the current, Islamic, anti-American, regime in Iran and to connect the birth of Christ with a Persian legacy, and to legitimize the "Death to America" chants of Iranians in Tehran. The Persians after all acknowledged the birth of the Messiah, and even brought him gifts.

The world is becoming anti-American, anti-West, and anti-Christian. Jones should know this. No ancient gift would expiate the ruthless aggression of this "Death to America" or its subtext, "Death to Christian America," proclamation. And why doesn't Jones understand, or acknowledge this?

Perhaps he does wish "death to America," in an innocent desire to abate what he believes is now a sinful, Godless, country, and to start afresh with a country which he believes could be re-positioned closer to God.

Here are some biblical and historical accounts of these magical, ancient, men: kings who came from afar to pay homage to the infant Christ.

From Matthew 2:1–12:
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another path.
The biblical version identifies these men as "wise men from the east."

Biblical historians and analysts say:
They were of noble birth, educated, wealthy, and influential. They were philosophers, the counselors of rulers, learned in all the wisdom of the ancient East. The wise men who came seeking the Christ child were not idolaters; they were upright men of integrity.

They had apparently studied the Hebrew Scriptures and found there a clear transcript of truth. In particular, the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament must have claimed their attention, and among these they found the words of Balaam: “A Star shall come out of Jacob; a Scepter shall rise out of Israel” (Numbers 24:17, NKJV). They certainly were acquainted with the prophecy of Micah: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2, NKJV; see also Matthew 2:5, 6). They probably also knew and understood the time prophecy of Daniel regarding the appearance of the Messiah (see Daniel 9:25, 26) and came to the conclusion that His coming was near.
[Source: The Magi]
And
They have become known most commonly as Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar (or Casper). According to Western church tradition, Balthasar is often represented as a king of Arabia or sometimes Ethiopia, Melchior as a king of Persia, and Gaspar as a king of India. [Source: Britannica.com]
And a more precise origin of Balthasar as an Ethiopian:
Balthasar is the young black King of Ethiopia and wears a purple/blue cloak. Balthasar is traditionally associated with the gift of myrrh. [Source: Jesuit Institute, London: Feast of the Epiphany]
An explanation: Ethiopia stands at the southern post of the Arabian peninsula, and is often categorized as an "Arabian" land. Its history may connect it to Arabia, but it has always maintained an independent and separate identity. It is very likely that one of the magi did come from Ethiopia.

And here is a longer account (and analysis) concluding that the probable land of origin of one of the magi was Ethiopia. Sheba's empire, now part of the modern state of Yemen, reached far north from what is currently Ethiopia into the Yemen.
Scholars have tried to connect the gifts the Queen of Sheba brought with the possible location of Sheba. She brought spices, gold, and precious stones, all products of extreme wealth. Spices, in particular frankincense and myrrh, came from the area of modern-day Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia, on the African coast of the Red Sea. Ancient gold mines have been found in the same area.
And
That Abyssinia (Ethiopia) was peopled from South Arabia is proved linguistically...[Source: Britannica.com]
And below is an excerpt from the chapter “Where is Medieval Ethiopia? Mapping Ethiopic Studies within Medieval Studies” by Suzanne Conklin Akbari (of the University of Toronto), in Toward a Gobal Middle Ages: Encountering the World through Illuminated Manuscripts (Ed. Bryan Keene).
[Note 1: images referenced in the text can be viewed at the linked site
Note 2: T-O map refers to a type of early world map]
In theological terms, Ethiopia was understood as a place of special grace and apocalyptic expectation. In the Hebrew Bible, the story of Solomon and Sheba was interpreted in terms of a mystical union that brought the earthly Jerusalem into contact with the southern riches of Ethiopia; in the Acts of the Apostles, the queen of Ethiopia, named Candace, is identified as the ruler of the Ethiopian eunuch who converts to Christianity. Apocryphal stories of the Magi, seen in a twelfth-century Beatus manuscript from San Petro de Cardeña (1175–85; New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1991.232.1), also associate one of the three wise men with Ethiopia, in a reassertion of the fundamentally tripartite division of the world found in the medieval world maps and medieval encyclopaedias. These texts divide the world into three parts—Asia, Africa, and Europe—to correspond to the three sons of Noah: Shem is associated with Asia, the biggest part; Ham, the outcast, with Africa; and Japheth, the youngest, with Europe. The three Magi recapitulate the sons of Noah, but while the sons of Noah are scattered outward into the wide world after the Flood, their descendants populating each of the three continents, the three Magi come inward toward the sacred center of the nativity. On this Beatus manuscript page, a depiction of the Virgin and Child with the Magi, to the right, is integrated within a larger genealogy laid out in a series of linked circles, plus the familiar form of the T-O world map at the top left. Note that the T-O map includes not just the names of the three continents, but also the three sons of Noah, as a visible reminder of the Old Testament prefiguration of the three Magi, seen at right. The economy of type and antitype is expressed in terms of word and image, with the
names of the sons of Noah foreshadowing the vivid human forms of the three Magi.

Depictions of the Magi vary in how they present the ethnic origins of each of the three kings. Some, such as the Beatus image mentioned above and as in a book of hours from Naples (1460s; Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Ms. Ludwig IX 12), show exotic dress but only moderate differences of physiognomy, while others, as in the Prayer Book of Albrecht of Brandenburg illuminated by Simon Bening (ca. 1483–1561), show bodily diversity more vividly, with black skin (fig. 4.4). Like the Ethiopian magus, depictions of the Queen of Sheba also vary in how they portray ethnicity. While there was a rich medieval commentary tradition on the Song of Songs that interpreted the allegory of the beautiful and black bride in historical terms, as the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba, pictorial depictions of the encounter of Solomon and Sheba often show the queen as fair-skinned, as in the page by Simon Bening that faces his image of the Magi.10 The queen is attended by two other women, her attendance on Solomon and offering of gifts appearing as a counterpart to the offerings of the three Magi. To put it another way, a chain of typological prefigurations links various moments in salvation history, with each one of them rooted in an essential notion of Ethiopian identity. In one typological relationship, the sons of Noah prefigure, and are fulfilled in, the three Magi. In a second typological relationship, the encounter of Solomon and Sheba, and the tribute offered by the Ethiopian queen to the king of Israel, is fulfilled in the tribute offered by the Ethiopian magus to the newborn king of the new Israel.

"Blessed Are The Meek"

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Ash Wednesday

I was in the lovey department store Simons today, and was glad to see that they had put aside the winter items (some at exorbitant sales prices) and replaced them with the cheery patterns of spring.

But a young girl reminded me of the real occasion.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Catholic calendar. The girl (in her twenties) had the charcoal cross on her forehead to signify this liturgical date.

She must have gone to mass to have that cross marked on her forehead by a priest. And in the morning too. I saw her around noon so she could have been on her lunch break. At first I thought she was a salesgirl.

"Good girl!" I said to her, and spoke with her (and her friend) for a couple of minutes before I went on my way (she is part Portuguese and part Polish).

It was a powerful and beautiful thing to see, the simple, crudely drawn cross on a young girl's forehead in the middle of a crowded mall.

It is with small steps like this, innocent, genuine, humble, and unaggressive, that we regain Christ's presence in this world.

This image was all the more powerful because of the jarring multicultural world that Mississauga has become. And in fact, only a few minutes after I left the store, a couple of men came behind me, walking very close behind me, talking loudly and unperturbed in Hindi.

I stopped and let them pass before I resumed my itinerary.

Jesus' Earthly Father

We read so much about Mary and Jesus, and the art world has glorified her role in so many ways, that in these few days before Christmas, I thought I would post some paintings and sculptures of Joseph with Jesus.
