"Cops are not perfect.


That’s not a news flash. But this might be: They don’t have to be perfect. They have to be excellent."

For over 39 years, I was a police officer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For 15 of those years, I was the Sheriff of Milwaukee County. I’ve done everything you can do as cop—from walking the beat, to investigating murder, to running the agency. I’ve met a lot of cops—of every race, ethnicity and background.

Here’s what I can tell you:

Cops are not perfect.

That’s not a news flash. But this might be: They don’t have to be perfect. They have to be excellent.

And most officers reach excellence every single day, and often under very difficult circumstances—circumstances you can’t imagine, and wouldn’t want to if you could.

Perfection is an unattainable goal. Cops are ordinary human beings. Like everyone else—lawyers, surgeons and baseball players—they make mistakes. But no profession works harder to correct its mistakes. You can mark social progress by the improvements made by police departments over the last 50 years. Today, police are more professional, better educated, and better trained than at any time in their history.

You wouldn’t know it, though, if you listened to self-serving, self-righteous politicians and activists. In their version of history, the police are the villains of the story, not its heroes. Like everything else this crowd does, they’ve got it all backwards.

The police aren’t the problem. The politicians and activists are.

The police didn’t create the failed urban policies that have locked people into generational poverty.

The police aren’t responsible for fatherless homes, failing schools, and bad lifestyle choices.

And they sure as hell aren’t responsible for the lack of respect shown to police officers. It is this lack of respect for authority, fostered over decades by the progressive left and its fear-the-police narrative, that has led to the needless deaths of so many young black men.

When Officer Darren Wilson told Michael Brown to get out of the middle of the street in Ferguson, Missouri, did Brown comply? No. When officers in Baltimore told Freddie Gray to stop resisting arrest, did he comply? No. When officers in New York City told Eric Garner to stop resisting arrest, did he comply? No.

Here’s a useful tip—if you want avoid a bad outcome with a police officer, follow this simple rule:

When a cop gives you a lawful command, obey it—even if you disagree. Whatever problem you are experiencing is not going to be settled on the street. People with complaints need to use the process established for that purpose. Though cops don’t have the final say, they do in that moment. How you react can be a matter of life or death.

But the idea that a law-abiding citizen has to fear the police is a terrible and destructive lie. Let’s get some perspective.

In 2014, 990 people were killed in police use-of-force incidents. Does that sound like a lot? Did you know that, according to a Johns Hopkins study, that same year, medical errors killed 250,000 people? Yet activists aren’t marching in the streets, demanding that the medical profession be reformed. Why not?

Why is it that the people who protect you from the bad guys—and I’ve seen these bad guys close up—are the subject of distrust and anger?

Why is it that groups like Black Lives Matter—I call them Black Lies Matter because it’s based on the falsehood that police represent a danger to black people—are celebrated by the media and politicians?

All this is taking its toll on cops and, even more tragically, on the law-abiding citizens in the neighborhoods that most need a strong police presence. The murder rates in these neighborhoods are going up because lawful, aggressive policing is going down.

Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute has explained why. She calls it “The Ferguson Effect.” And it’s real. It’s also common sense. Why, police officers reason, put your career at risk, if 30 seconds of smartphone video taken out of context can destroy it?

Here’s the truth: Police aren’t afraid of walking the streets or being shot by random criminals. They’re afraid of being involved in an incident that would label them forever as trigger-happy racists.

Are there bad cops? I know first-hand that there are—I’ve had to fire them.

But the overwhelming majority are good, decent men and women, concerned about the law-abiding citizens in the communities they serve and are willing to put their lives on the line to protect them.

Those who try to convince you, either out of ignorance or out of some ideological agenda, that the police are the enemy—those are the people you should fear.

Run from them.

Not the cops.

In my last post on the series of posts I've don on the VDare non-reporting on the devastation that the fake COVID has done on the US economy, I wrote on VDare author's Sailer's June 4 post: Cristalnacht in the Fairfax District:

It begs the question: Was the VDare group, realizing that eventually the fake virus would unleash societal upheavals, cleverly deducing that it would become a racial blowup, where blacks would feel even more "oppressed," while whites, even the poor whites, appear to be doing that (little) much better?

As always, the VDare group has some wrong end of the stick. And it usually involves blacks. And a subservient, under-the-radar acknowledgment of Jewish "victimhood." Who exactly finances VDare's big enterprises - e.g.: Their Castle on the Virginia Hills? And who has the deepest, and strongest, vested interest in destroying Christianity?

Sailer is not letting off his Jewish-link, i.e. antisemtic, theory, as an update on his June 4 post.

Notice that this is the generic "people." Were they whites, Hispanics, blacks? How many? A whole Dionysian mob?

Is it the "antifa" which is effing the Jews?

Well, here is some information:

Israeli-born philanthropist and activist Adam Milstein...said: “The rioters are antifa and Black Lives Matter and they are inherently antisemitic.”

Why anti-semitic? Because they ransacked some stores? No, because:

"...synagogues got tagged and Jewish businesses were looted with [signs saying] ‘Free Palestine’ and ‘Kill the Jews,’ [which] is not a coincidence. The rioters are antifa and Black Lives Matter and they are inherently antisemitic.”

So who at VDare really cares about the fate of blacks, those hundreds of thousands of blacks, who are at at the same mercy, (and even worse), as are whites, of the vicious hands of these hired gun thugs who are rampaging through America's cities?

But Jews are leftists, and "activists," in one form or another, and explains Jonathan Friedman:

....who owns Syd’s Pharmacy, also in the Fairfax area, he’s unclear if he was targeted because he is Jewish or if it’s because looters were after narcotics – all of which were taken from his store.

“It’s frustrating,” he added. “We had no part in this. They had no reason to involve us. I understand the [protesters’] cause. They’re actually right. Someone was murdered and they’re right, but I don’t see where myself and other businesses, that were suffering with corona, have the extra $3,000 to cover the deductible for their insurance, fit into this whole thing.”

Syd "understands" these thug looters, who are victims, don't you know. There can be some excuse for antisemites.

I wrote about John Derbyshire's article on Tedros Ghebreyesus, the World Health Organization's Director-General, here, and some background on Derbyshire here, and his half-Chinese children, here.

Why is VDare using Derbyshire, a white British man (naturalized American), married to a woman he met in China, as their white representative to "save" America from immigrants and multiculturalism?

I believe VDare's underlying principle is IQ. People with high intelligence, on par with the intelligence of whites, make better Americans than all the others - Hispanics, Arabs, Africans,etc.

Therefore Derbyhsire's Chinese wife is of no concern, since she comes from a country which purports to have high IQ population groups.

Of course, the high Asian IQ theory has its problems, which I've discussed here.

And a high IQ is not a guarantor that anyone, or any nation, will be successful. There are other factors, what I would call the Aesthetic IQ, which determines how one views beauty, the Spiritual IQ, how one lives in accordance with higher principles, and finally the God IQ, how nations and their people figure the Biblical God in the formation of their civilizations.

I presume that Derbyshire has a high "traditional" IQ, which he uses exclusively, and which led him to discard his God IQ, publicly proclaiming his atheism. I also think he is deficient in the Aesthetic IQ, but I won't go into that.

Derbyshire's two children, a half-Chinese son and a half-Chinese daughter, appear in many of his posts, where he has documented their birth to early twenties life in his family album posts. But there is no report on their current situations. Both Danny and Nellie Derbyshire are now nearing their 30s. What are they doing?

Perhaps nothing so impressive as to live up to the subtle IQ hype Derbyshire proudly presented in their earlier years.

I wonder why VDare allows John Derbyshire to write his articles on blacks? I would think his multi-culti expertise would lie more with the Chinese, to one of whom Mr. Derbyshire is married.

Here is one fascinating article where Derbyshire discusses Chinese immigrants in Markham, Ontario, Canada(!).

Derbyshire's point in this article is how LEGAL Chinese immigrants organized protests on ILLEGAL refugees being shipped into Markham:

More encouraging is news from Markham, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto with a big concentration of Chinese immigrants.

This started when Toronto found they had more illegal aliens than they could find accommodation for. Numbers coming across the border from the U.S.A. have been swelling the past couple of years, and of course they are all claiming to be refugees from something or other.

Once that got around, a demonstration was organized. To judge from videos and press accounts, the demonstrators were all Chinese. There were big signs on display in English, Chinese, and Chinglish. Samples:

It was a good spirited gathering, though. There was a counter-protest on behalf of the illegals, carrying signs of their own: REFUGEES WELCOME, NOBODY IS ILLEGAL, and so on. A lot of them were Chinese, too, but there were also round-eyes in evidence on that side.

Inevitably there were fisticuffs, but no-one was seriously hurt. I would like to have seen some Chinese martial arts on display, but the most fearsome participant was a young Dragon Lady type with an ear-splitting voice out of Chinese opera, who chased some of the counter-protestors right off the field.

Chinese immigrants, and their several-generations-down inheritors STILL refer to their Chinese, from China, background, and intrinsically search for that reference, and assurance.

Even, Derb's daughter, rather than go for the Whites of her father's background, chose instead an undecipherable (at least in presentation) of a brown man as her mate. What good is having a white father if even he cannot convince you of the goodness of his race?

Derbyshire forfeited that wisdom, and authority, when he traveled across the oceans and married a Chinese woman. His British adventurous fore-fathers never did that, at least not officially, and publicly. The reason colonization worked is because they kept the natives, the inhabitants, of those countries in their countries. They didn't make a bargain through "love and marriage" and opened up the Pandora's box of multiculturalism through multi-racial offspring. Derbyshire is now having to maneuver through that conundrum, with a boyfriend (future son-in-law?) his daughter brought home, with a foreboding face, who might not really like him.

Then what?

Who would Keep the Order?

I was waiting behind this gentleman in Walmart. There was the usual bustle of people in line where we have no cultural or social ties to induce or encourage civil behaviour. For one, many people still communicate in their "native" languages. Stay on line, keep a distance between shopping carts, avoid conversation which can lead to miscommunication, and pay your grocery bills with a friendly "hello" to the physically and mentally overworked cashier.

This old man was clearly in a hurry and, as luck would have it, he landed on a cashier with very limited English (a nice, old Italian woman). She got some figures wrong and he brought it to her attention, politely and quietly. Then, as he left, he saw a pile of cardboard in the way. He could have walked around it as most people would do, but he took the time to push them aside onto a ledge. Then he walked off to whatever engagement he had, without too much hurry and with no irritation.

This is the white man that multiculturalists are demonizing and slowly pushing out.

Who would keep the order once he's gone?

And Sara Gilbert, a lesbian "married" with three children (IV and other conception and birth methods), who is Jewish (on both sides).

Other members of this illustrious group are:

- Eve, a black hip-hop musician who is for her 2002 song “Let Me Blow Ya Mind, and who has acted in a t.v. production titled "xXx.”

- Sheryl Underwood, a black military woman and comedian, and "a lifelong Republican." However, she campaigned for Barack Obama's re-election in 2012. She also campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election "because," she says "we have to protect the legacy of President Obama. Low voter turnout benefits Donald Trump and the Republicans. He can't win."

These personalities are deliberately chosen to undermine the white majority of America, amongst whom are found the racist, sexist, homophobic and all round evil people who voted for President Trump. But Trump is not their ally and in fact is closer to Underwood than she thinks, and who has been capitulating towards liberals (and Democrats) since his election.



In the above video, the "ladies" at The View, after which the badly worded "The Talk" (that's what you do with your 12-year old) was molded chime in and with some humor by Joy Behar.

Chen also hosts Big Brother which she started before she married Moonves. Big Brother is a creepy show where a group of strangers live in the same "house" for a period of time as they get eliminated over "challenges." There is Survivor (a far superior show) which challenges people in some wild and remote island. But in the same house as people with no way of going out unless you're eliminated? Well for half a million dollars...

I counted 25 whites of the posted 81 photos. That is 30% of the total. Although I would say it is a lower 25% now in Mississauga.

I clicked on the Facebook images of the participants. There is NOTHING about them. Who is this young man? Where does he go to school? What are his hobbies? Just three questions would have added more humanity to the project rather than the grandiose portrait project that purports "to reveal this complexity" but doesn't. Instead we have giant faces blowing in the haphazard summer wind claiming to represent "multicultural" Canada and does a disservice to those very multiculturals by making them into anonymous faces on a city-subsidized banner project.

Whites may be used to this anonymity by now, but what about the browns and blacks?

During an impromptu interview on the White House lawn with Steve Doocy of "Fox and Friends" on Friday, President Donald Trump ...offered his own account of his recent tiff with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"We're hugging. We're saying goodbye. Everybody's happy," Trump told Doocy [of Fox News]. "I made changes to the agreement because I wanted it to be much better for the United States. I made changes. We're all happy. And then he got up and started saying that he doesn't want to be pushed around by the United States. Well, they charge us almost 300 percent on dairy products. So we can't do that stuff."

By the way, this was no "impromptu" interview. Trump is a media guy. He knows how to handle those "fake newsers." He just showed on his big lawn to up the drama. And get his cowboy message across.

I can't remember what exactly I was watching when I had this "flash" about Bourdain's "suicide."

Of course Bourdain looks creepy with his tattooed arms. And his super skinny body (especially his legs) indicates a drug-addict's appearance. But cooking for one's job is tough. Cooking is tough, period. The heat, the slippery floor, all that washing, setting the timer, and setting it right, so food doesn't burn, or worse over-cook (you can throw burnt food out), tasting, and finally the verdict (too much salt will get the frying pan out!) A "celebrity" "international" chef is not a glamorous career. Traveling is very tiring. You get sick in foreign, third world, lands which even the best of treatment and the most sophisticated "anti-malarial/anti-bacterial/anti-everything" medications cannot prevent.

But Bourdain was a good sport. He enjoyed traveling despite its grueling schedule. He sat down and ate with the "natives." He went beyond the food and really tried to understand the cultures. He was professional and kept up his CNN reportage diligently.

But. No-one was able to report on the "suicide note." We don't know what it said and even to whom it was addressed. Presumably it is to his young daughter. He split up wth his wife (or she split up with him more likely), and was with a new girlfriend, who also split up with him recently! These professional feminists just cannot stand the idea of supporting a man with a super busy life who would have time for them only during brief "down times" and when all he wants is a comfortable and familiar home with a wife and family who can welcome him full heartedly. Think of soldiers and warriors who, if they didn't have their stable homes and loving wives, COULDN'T fight dedicatedly. Who would they be fighting for?! Who would Bourdain be cooking for?

Asia Argento, his new girlfriend, used to travel with him, but I guess the exoticism wore off when she was left in empty luxury hotels as Bourdain went off into the common quarters to find that special local dish. She was seen wandering around with a new boyfriend.

The conclusion by journalists is that Argento's new affair was what triggered off Bourdain's suicide.

Maybe so. The account I have written certainly can explain it.

But I don't think so. A man dedicated to his work, a kind of a chef-warrior, seasoned, experienced and who has probably been through all kinds of social and professional obstacles, doesn't suddenly kill himself because his new girlfriend split up with him.

Others say that he contemplated suicide for a long time because of a nihilistic streak of "is life worth living?".

No. If you have travelled at all, you know that traveling, and with a cause (like finding great recipes) can be invigorating. And Bourdain was with people all the time. Helping people. Talking and joking with people. Showing the world in his globalist liberal way that we are all one big close-to-happy world. A bit like his close-to-happy chef's life.

Maybe if he had built his career solely in a big city (like New York) and was a drug addict in his super-luxury enclave (like Kate Spade), abandoned by wives and girlfriends and pushed to go on by his heroin and other drugs, he might have become that white male suicide victim.

Perhaps. But how many alcoholics and drug addicts commit suicide?

The statistics of white male suicides is apparently on the rise. But is it really an epidemic? Does Bourdain fit that profile other than "middle-aged white male?"

Here is an interesting video which suggests that his shift towards more conservative ideology may have ignited the wrath of his globalist liberal followers. The youtuber - goes on to say that Bourdain might have been privy to all kinds of illicit and illegal international activities, like pedophilic sex trafficking, prostitution rings, border-crossing guides for illegal migration, etc. etc.

This makee complete sense. If he talks to village henchmen in an African village, they will TELL him things surely. If he cooks with the local chef in some South Asian town, he will reveal the next river crossing on the way to Australia. He cannot enter into these Third World countries without the special permission of the top leaders of these countries. And so on.

Before we jump on to band wagons that white men are killing themselves off and dying like flies, let's not put every suspicious death into the same basket.

But if, as the Times reports, these students do not even know of the existence of better colleges in America, and they have absolutely no aspiration to attend any schools that are outside their local area, how smart and talented could they be? They appear to have very small horizongs and little knowledge of and little curiosity in the world. Don’t very smart people tend to have large horizons?. My guess is that the Times is doing its usual rationalizations for the intellectual and other deficiencies of blacks. I did not read the entire article,but I’d say that it’s fair possibility that it ends up asserting that these students are culturally and geographically isolated by racial discrimination and by the lack of special federal programs that inform them of the existence of better schools. The eternal top-priority project and moral obligation of Liberal America (America 2.0)—at unlimited cost in societal effort, taxpayers’ money, and orchestrated white guilt—is to render blacks in general as functional as whites in general. And that will never happen. And no one who makes his living in mainstream America dare say it..

I saw from Steve Sailer’s post on the same article that the low-income, high-aptitude cohort under discussion is 69 percent white and 15 percent Asian. So the large majority of the kids at issue are white.

Thanks for the correction. But I wonder if that information was in the Times article (which, again, I didn’t read the whole of and was only making a reasonable speculation on, based on past Timesean behavor), or only in the Sailer post.

The racial breakdown is in the NY Times article itself, about midway through. I suspect that Sailer is right that the problem is really with white kids, since channels are in place to whisk whatever (relatively) high-aptitude black kids make it through high school (most of whom are female) into elite colleges. Such kids are in extremely high demand, as I’m sure you know. By contrast, the powers that be could not care less about smart white kids from lower middle class or working class backgrounds. [LA replies: That all makes sense, and is not surprising. But it’s still fascinating. By the way, like Mr. Spock, I never say, “Fascinating” ironically, which people often think I do, because such behavior is now so common. I never (well, hardly ever) give a compliment ironically, which, again, has become a common behavior in our increasingly cynical and nihilist age.]

I’m amazed that you are able to do as much as you are still doing with the site. Your will power is amazing. May your pain be moderated and may you continue to make good use of your time with us, however you see fit.

Interestingly, Deuteronomy 28, in which God alternatively presents the blessings and miseries he will deliver to the children of Israel depending on whether they follow or don’t follow his ways, is the source of the quote that I used at the end of my speech, “Multiculturalism and the War against White America,” at the first American Renaissance conference in May 1994.

I agree with what you said in the initial entry. Whether they be white or black, how intelligent can these young people be if they are so provincial? I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens and I remember as a teenager there were a couple of kids I knew who had never been over the bridge to Manhattan. Imagine that! They lived a mere three to five miles away from the world’s most famous and celebrated city, and they had never been over the bridge nor had their parents taken them.

I went to high school in “the provinces” (Phoenix) but not in a low-income family. Just the opposite—I attended an expensive private school. Many of my classmates attended highly selective and prestigious universities. Yet an appreciable number of them attended the local, low-prestige school (Arizona State). These people had certainly heard of high-prestige schools back East, knew people who attended them, and could afford them, but chose not to attend these schools themselves. The problem was not lack of intelligence, knowledge or money, but motivation. Some of them didn’t want to be geographically far from their parents, others just didn’t know what they wanted to do with their lives. If this problem exists at the higher end of the income spectrum, I imagine it is even more prevalent at the lower end. The article notes, “Low-income students who excel in high school often do not graduate from the less selective colleges they attend”—which indicates to me that the problem is indeed motivation, not brains. You can graduate from high school on autopilot because all your choices are made for you and then wind up floundering in college because there are too many choices.

Thus the idea that these low-income kids in the Times article are “not really” smart and talented may be wide of the mark. I suspect that the system will make a special effort to seek out and attempt to inspire unmotivated black kids, and will be more likely to let unmotivated white kids fall through the cracks. (“If you don’t take advantage of your White Privilege, we have no sympathy for you!”)

This is very interesting and has the ring of truth.
Your observations remind me of someone I know. He is highly intelligent and extremely articulate. He writes like an angel. He is cultivated, being deeply knowledgeable about such fields as classical music and opera.

When he told me that he had never attended college, I was, frankly, gobsmacked, meaning that I was astounded to the utmost degree of astonishment.

He was graduated from high school in a Midwestern state in the mid-1970s. Now if I heard the same story from a person who went to high school in the 1930s or early ’40s, I would not have been astounded, because before the postwar period, as we learned from the Part One of The Bell Curve, before the postwar period people with high IQ were scattered throughout every walk of life in this country; but after the war the American system of education began pushing cognitively able young people into college and the professions, especially via the SATs, which had been deliberately designed to search out the cognitively talented who previously had not gone to college.

So how did it happen that he did not attend college, and how did it happen that he spoke so well and wrote so well without have gone to college? I had never met a person lacking a college education who expressed himself so well, with a perfect command of English usage and grammar. (And readers know how fussy I am about that—I am the man who will sit up in my coffin at my funeral and correct the pastor on a grammatical mistake!)

First, he had not had any intellectual or academic interests when he was in high school. He was into crafts, athleticism, things like that. The thought of college had simply never occurred to him. Second—and this part still astounds me—not a single adult in his life, whether his parents, his teachers, or his school advisors, had ever talked to him about the idea of his going to college. He had not even taken the SATs.

Second, as for his marked intellectual abilities and accomplishments, he only acquired intellectual interests in his twenties. He must have read a great deal, and developed on his own his excellent writing abilities.

I don’t know what general lessons this story offers, as it is in my knowledge atypical, indeed, unique. I’ve told it because I find it so interesting, and because it shows a unique individual.

Update: A Prayer for Zach

Zach got a hero's welcome home to Barrie on Tuesday.

I wonder though about his stepfather.

At an interview with CTV Barrie at the finishing point, Derek Clark, who accompanied Zach through the marathon route said about the course:

The tenth kilometer every single day he seemed to crash and he wanted to quit, and he wanted to give up. And I just kept reiterating to him that the whole reason he's doing this is to bring awareness to mental health.

Of course the challenge is tough. Isn't that why the stepdad went for the ride, to support, and especially to encourage, Zach?

I wonder if a real father would have made such statements? All warriors need boosting. The sergeant doesn't disclose those private, tough moments.

I think everyone wants Zach to believe that he is weak, and that he may indeed have "mental problems" himself.

Also, I think that the stepdad is angry, in a passive aggressive way. Zach exposed a family secret which he married into. I wonder if he knew that Zach's mother had these problems before he married her?

Yesterday, I was having my early morning coffee at the central square here in Mississauga, when a young man at a table next to me acted a little strange, moving from one seat to another. I asked him if the sun bothered him. "No, there's a wasp here," he replied. He then asked if he could join me. "Certainly," I said.

I asked him if he was a student at the nearby Sheridan College. He said that he had actually just graduated from high school. He's from Caledon, a town north of Mississauga, And he planned to go to a technical architectural school. He said he is skilled at drawing, and he's thinking about taking an Autocad course. I told him that was a good idea, since drawing is still important, no matter how technical these fields get. I told him I know this from experience, since I have studied design.

He said he was off to the library just across from the fountains, after his breakfast, .

He was pessimistic about job prospects. "It all because of immigrants" he said to me. "The government is shipping them here, educating them, and giving them the jobs, which they take at really low salaries." I was surprised at his forthright manner. I let that go for a while.

He also said that he might go into social work. I couldn't figure out why he decided on this. Later on, I looked him up on the internet,and here is his profile. Here is what his "counselor" says:

Miss Andrew: Ian is a caring individual who works to make others happy. He struggles with putting others needs before his own, however he is getting better at asking for support when having a rough day. Another difficulty that Ian struggles with is his attention span. Ian has worked hard to come up with strategies to help with his attention and is able to focus when he needs to.
This sounds like a typical, female, "empathetic" teacher, the classic diagnoser of "Attentions Deficit Disorder," which is the great mental health fabrication of the ages, meant to put young men on a leash.

She now has this young man thinking he has some kind of psychological problem, and has pulled him into that victim's world, all geared up to help other "victims."

I told him to concentrate on the architecture studies. That these days, we need good buildings. "Look at the horrible high rises cropping up all over. Look at what we have in front of us."

I asked him what he thought of "Celebration Square."

He liked it: "It seems a good blend of nature, design, architecture and recreation."

I agreed with him. I also said that the yellow brick is a traditional Ontario stone, mined from quarries in northern Ontario. Older Toronto homes used this brick.

"And all this glass, what do you think? Some are even falling!" I said. I told him about the Royal Ontario Museum, designed by a German architect, Daniel Libeskind, where falling glass became a joke around town.

He agreed with that too. And mentioned some other buildings in downtown Toronto where potentially falling glass has been a problem.

I told him that there are designers who are working on durable glass, and also glass that doesn't make the interiors into ovens, with sun and heat coming in.

I went back to his original outburst of "it's the immigrants."

"What do you think of Asian students who are filling up university technical fields? It isn't enough to be skillful, it is important to be creative as well. Like the windows. To build the kind of "open" space people like these days, one should be able to invent glass that can prevent people from looking in and maintain privacy, and keep the heat from the sun turning the interior into an oven. And to make them durable and unbreakable. Do you think Chinese have this skill and creativity, and invention, to produce such kinds of structures?"

"Asians have the skills, but equally important as skill is creativity and inventions abilities, and I believe Asians aren't up to par with white students."

He looked relieved that someone was talking to him about these things. He is barely eighteen, but he looks like he had the weight of the world around him. He said his family history is of welders, iron workers, and those who managed construction sites. He got his idea of architecture from that family background.

I asked for his email and promised to send him some of my posts and articles on architecture, and the changing landscape of Toronto. I said I would like his feedback. He seemed happy about that request. I told him to hang in there, and to work at his talents. "We need good buildings," I told him.

He excused himself to go to the library.

I hope I run into him again.

I think whites are beginning to realize that they have been duped! And smart, young ones like Ian (when I asked him for his email, he actually spelled i-a-n for me, as though no-one knows how to spell that name! As though it is Mohammed, or even Kidist!) are beginning to figure this out. I think his "social work" ideas were actually to help those like him, who have been made to feel, by teachers, the media, their society, that they are no good.

And when I think back on his forthrightness when he talked to me, I think he is reacting to the current news, the racial horror in Ferguson, the Mexican illegals in Texas and Arizona, and Islam's war on the world, and especially the West.

I think he will figure things out.

Re-re-Appropriation

The title of my previous post "Native Son" is a play on words and meaning from the book Native Son by Black American (then referred to as American Negro) writer Richard Wright, who was no "son" and refused to be a "native."

Black Americans appear to be in perpetual anger against their white countrymen, towards whom they never feel convivial. Wright wrote his "Native Son," just before the tumultuous "sixties" to which he contributed nonetheless as a Communist, when white Americans were cornered into accepting the superiority of blacks, and not simply their equality.

Here is a quote from what he wrote:

The white folks like for us to be religious, then they can do what they want to with us.

This must be where former President Barrack Obama must have got his Whites, guns and religion reference from.

And here is the homosexual spokesman for Wright, James Baldwin, who fled America to France, not as some original form of protest, but to join other American expatriate writers and artists who preferred to criticize their country from a distance:

Out of this incredible brutality, we get the myth of the happy darky and Gone With the Wind. And the North Americans appear to believe these legends, which they have created and which absolutely nothing in reality corroborates, until today. Paula Deen, the "Southern cook" is in a lot of trouble. She committed the Crime of the Century. She used the n-word. I am sure this was not in malice, as her apology videos repeatedly show. I think it is a traditional Southern thing, where the word simply means black, although with the connotation of a "black gone bad," as white trash, a term used both by blacks and whites, is for whites gone bad. In fact, nigger is used freely by blacks, who use it "endearingly" for a fellow black, usually of a lower class, and who may be involved in some kind of criminal behavior. Blacks have a whole hierarchy of words to classify each other by. They have a clear understanding of each other's limitations.

I think Deen also used the word to point out the limitation of these "nigger" blacks around her, yet towards whom she still feels paternal (or maternal, in her case). She feels close enough to blacks to call them out (by using the word nigger) on behaviors they could improve. I think she still lives psychologically in the Gone With the Wind era, where black slaves were affectionately, and paternalistically, taken care of by their white owners, and punished (some harshly and cruelly) when they breached these social expectations. And the slaves understood these contracts, and took affectionate care of their masters, as Mammy did of the rebellious Scarlett.

Deen says something similar:

Back then [when she was younger], black folk were such integral part of our lives, they were like our family, and for that reason, we didn't see ourselves as being prejudiced.

Blacks were generally grateful towards whites, not for some crumbs they received, but for the protective and familial way in which they were mostly treated. Now, what we have is begrudging, relentlessly accusatory, deeply dissatisfied black Americans, who have reaped the benefits of white America, and yet who are never satisfied, and will at every opportunity point a finger at whites.

I think that whites still feel have a protective attitude towards blacks, to keep them out of trouble, and to keep them American, which means following the rules and leadership of whites as their fellow countrymen, and the contracts of the country. Yet, blacks no longer have this affectionate, familial attitude towards whites. In fact 99% of blacks now think that whites are out to harm them, and they will always be vigilant and hostile towards whites.

But, it is still whites who are the arbitrators of justice for blacks. It is whites who are causing the demise of Deen's businesses, where major retailers are closing their doors on Deen's products for her "racist" behavior.

According to The Examiner:

Sears, Kmart, Walgreens and J.C. Penney are the latest retailers to end their business relationships with Paula Deen. In addition, Ballantine Books just called off a lucrative five-book deal. That makes a total of 11 business partners who have now distanced themselves from the controversial cook.

These partners included Target, Walmart, Novo Nordisk (a diabetes drug maker), The Food Network, QVC, Caesars Entertainment Corp (of casinos), Smithfield (which specializes in hams and pork products), and Home Depot.

And it is the news media, run and controlled by a white majority, which are demanding that she make a national apology for her behavior.

Now, the interesting thing here is that whites are once again protecting blacks! From the evils of the Crime of the Century - Racism. Paula Deen, in her candid way, spoke up about blacks and hurt their feelings. That's all she did: she didn't kill anyone; she didn't destroy any black's home or businesses; she didn't yell in public obscenities against blacks. She just used words to describe the black person in a way that is no longer acceptable to the do-gooder, black-saving whites of the twenty-first century version.

So, there it is: both parties (the "For Deen" and the "Against Deen") are protecting the ever-vulnerable blacks to this day.

Deen is making the apology circuit, after she posted her own apology videos on Youtube. The first Youtube video shows a confident, yet penitent Deen. I watched the second video with fascination, and a little horrified. She was disheveled and rambling. The last I could bear to watch is her Today Show interview with Matt Lauer on June 26. Deen sits like a reprimanded child next to the pinched-nosed, finger-pointing Lauer, who glares at her.

Is this what the modern world is making of its icons? There is no doubt that Deen was admired by many. Some may have even idolized her. Now, she has been reduced into an incoherent mess. To have a full society land on you like that must be devastating, especially after it had you on a pedestal for so long. I've never watched her full cooking show, but whenever I saw her, I liked her confidence. She seemed like a friendly, talented, enterprising Southern woman who was running a many-faceted business.

So this what a white woman is reduced to in a culture that idolizes blacks. She may not fully realize what happened to her, or find a way to respond to all those "allegations," but people are watching, and especially white people. The idiots like Lauer will forever hold their indignant glare, but others will realize the demonization that is taking place, and will react to a country that is holding them guilty without any chance of showing their innocence.

Publishers are cancelling the publication of her new book, saying that it is a business decision:

When Walmart, Target and J. C. Penney all announced they are discontinuing their Paula Deen business, including books, it is awfully tough to stay the course of a publication. It was a business decision...

But ordinary white Americans brought her other cookbooks up to the #1 spot on Amazon.com after Deen hit the prime time news these past few weeks.

Mainstream publishers and retailers may be dropping her books and products, but her supporters will find new ways to promote her work, and continue her franchises. This may take time, and it may include much smaller venues. It looks like America may indeed eventually follow Lawrence Auster's idea of separation:

Those who identify with the former American nation and still want to be part of an American nation must separate themselves from the leftist USA and create new communities and new political expressions suitable for Americans. Until such communities are created, the separation can only be mental and spiritual. But that is the necessary starting point.

"My Brother the Jihadist": From White Middle-Class to Muslim Jihadist The Ummah's Expansion is Accelerating

The PBS documentary My Brother the Islamist (or My Brother the Jihadist in other versions) describes the trajectory of a white lower-middle class young man from his very British background to that of a Muslim bomb-plotter. The full video is on view here, but I tried to understand what would compel Richard Dart, an ordinary young Brit, to leave his family and his society to join a religion where he would train to kill.

Richard Dart was arrested (in 2012)...

after police seized computers from his home address in Ealing following long surveillance.

Evidence showed the men [Dart and fellow Jihadist Imran Mahmood] discussed targeting [Royal] Wootton Bassett, the Wiltshire town where residents paid their respects to repatriated [bodies of] British troops killed in Afghanistan from 2007 until September 2011.

not only blowing up returning soldiers, but also grieving families as war dead were repatriated through the royal town.

A short (partial) transcript below of the film My Brother the Jihadist describes how Robb Leech, the very competent director of the film and Richard Dart's step-brother, started his quest to understand his brother's conversion to Islam. Richard now goes by the name Salahuddin Al-Britanni.

He was clearly looking for something. A year later, he'd found it.

I came across an article about radical Islamist Anjem Choudary. Someone who believes in imposing a world-wide Islamic state. And dubbed the most dangerous man in Britain. Four paragraphs down was Richard's name, and that of our hometown, Weymouth. He'd become one of Choudry's newest converts.

Rich talked of his willingness to fight and die for his beliefs, his hatred of the West, and his desire to impose Sharia law and make Britain an Islamic state.

Even now, my family is still struggling trying to come to terms with it all. And its why I'm making this film. To help us understand. [From the beginning of the video to about the 3 minute point]

Later on, we get a glimpse into the turning points of other lower-middle class/middle class white British men and their conversion to Islam:

I was surprised to find so many Muslim sisters [white women] in veils heading up the protest. But more surprising is the number of white brothers. I honestly thought Rich would be unique. But they're everywhere. So what connects them? And why have they turned their backs on the Western world?

I was struggling, and failing, to think of an equivalent moment for Rich.

Rich's malaise was more stretched-out, and a general malaise at his existence and the lifestyle he saw around him. He thought Islam would make it all better.

The film, although purporting to expose "radical Islamism," is a good account of the lives and conversions to Islam of white British men, and their existential crises which directed them to embrace Islam, and to die for Allah.

When humans are bereft of a belief system, a higher order which satisfactorily explains their existence to them, they will invariably look for one. Modern Christianity has done a miserable job of saving people from Islam and safeguarding them from its predatory methods.

I looked at the demographics for Weymouth, the town where Robb and Richard grew up.

The most outstanding thing about these demographics is that the town, in 2009, is 94% white, and in 2011 is barely 1% Muslim. I doubt that these demographics changed much over the following few years.

But, there is something equally glaring. When asked their religious affiliation in 2011, close to one third of the Weymouth/Portland population said "No Religion" and 8% did not state a religion. About 40% of the population, close to half, does not associate with any kind of religion. Given the weak nature of the Church of England, the 61% who do say they are Christian (who are most likely predominantly the Protestant British) probably do it for cultural and (weak) traditional reasons.

Host Steve Paiken of the Canadian news program The Agenda recently interviewed Garry Wills in Christianity without Priests (here is the video to the episode).

The table below describing church attendance went up during the interview, from a table posted on the program (around the 27-29 minute points):

Paiken commented on the table that George Weigel, a Catholic writer whom Paiken had interviewed earlier in his show said (here is the video of Weigel's interview: Does Christianity Need a Church):

"The religions that require more from you are doing better. And the religions that are more liberal and...require less from you are fading."

Islam knows this very well. And it makes demands, huge demands, on its followers. It also looks for those who are searching for certainties and expectations.

Dart left Weymouth, and his family, for London. It was soon after that he "converted" to Islam. He became an easy target for Islam: a young man in existential crisis, looking for something to fill the void of God.

Islam's proselytism works well within communities and with individuals where religion has been abandoned, or where it no longer has strict expectations. The Anglican community fits this description. Dart and Leech came from a community where 29% of the population says it has no religion. And being an English community, the majority of those that would associate with some kind of religion would be Anglicans, which is seeing a 20% decline in church attendance. So, not only would religion be downplayed in a community like Weymouth, but those who follow any kind of Protestant Christianity would practice is far less often, as seen by general church attendance.

I would think that Dart's and Leech's parents, who lived lived more sophisticated intellectual life of teachers, would not give much importance to religion. They would fit well the statistics of Anglicans who's church attendance has declined, and who would respond to the "no religion" options of the survey. And that is how they would most likely have brought up their sons.

In fact, Leech says in his film:

Our family holiday to Cyprus in 2008 was the last time I saw Richard. we shared a room and talked late into the night about God and the Universe.

He was clearly looking for something. A year later, he'd found it.

Dart was twenty-five then. By the time he was twenty-six, he had found Islam, or Islam had found him.

He moved to London, to the Borough of Ealing, where he worked as a security guard.

Although Ealing's whites make up a majority of about 2/3 of the population, there is still a large, and most likely vocal and aggressive, Asian population of 24%, or almost 1/4 of the population. This is where the confused, searching, Dart would have found his "answers."

Dart says in My Brother the Jihadist:

The worst of the Muslims is better than the best of the Kaffir...That is why the Kaffar will be held in fire for eternity.

Not only did Allah create the world, he also gave us a law and a way to live in order to prepare ourselves for the day of judgment.

Dart:

...changed his name to Salahuddin al-Britani, became involved in extremism after moving from his home town Weymouth to east London and fraternising with radical preacher Anjem Choudary. [Source: Daily Mail]

He:

...pleaded guilty to preparing for terrorism or assisting another in terrorism, between July 2010 and July [2012] at the Old Bailey today.[Source: Sun UK]

Dart's preparation for the day of judgment has began. His six years in prison will only prepare him for other acts he will perform, violent or not, in order to prove his worth for Allah's paradise.

Steve Paiken asks George Weigel:

What is the harm in just being spiritual as opposed to going to church every Sunday and taking on sacraments etc.?"

Weigel answers:

Finally, the harm Steve, it doesn't take you out of the great loneliness of modernity. Modernity and post-modernity tend to be very lonely places.

Not for everybody

Weigel:

Well, for a lot of people. I've walked up University Avenue today in Toronto, from City Hall to the Provincial Parliament, and fully half of the people walking past are living in their own little pod world with ear things in their ears. There's no human connection there...This has been a constant theme of philosophers, psychologists, sociologists for two hundred and fifty years. There is some, there is a break down of human community throughout the Western world, in all of its various forms. The phenomenon described by Robert Putnam in that famous article Bowling Alone, and that is part of what the church can offer people, I mean the Church in its broadest sense. It offers a community of people, many of whom are confused, not fully convinced, searchers, as the lingo would have it, but who nonetheless find in the presence of others a way to satisfy that yearning for the transcendent. That wish for an attachment to something larger than "me, myself and I."

It was this desire for something bigger than "me, myself and I" that induced the searching Dart to give himself over to Islam.

I would expect that over the years, conversions of white, nominally Christian men and women to Islam will only increase.

Choudary called Dart's Jihadist actions as "an act of resistance" and
that Dart was victim of the Britain's "oppressive" legal system.

Anjem Choudary is a British-born former solicitor, and head of the banned group Islam4UK which he formed after its predecessor, al-Muhajiroun, was also banned. He became the Islamic cleric that guided Dart's spiritual life.

Dart had tried to obtain terrorist training in Pakistani camps

...having been told by [Choudary] that ‘Jihad training’ is a duty for Muslim men.

Dart had consequently visited Pakistan

...for terrorist training, although [he] were unsuccessful in that aim.

The most recent news on Dart is from his court appearance where

...Dart refused to stand when he was sentenced, saying: "I don't wish to stand up. I believe ruling and judging is only for Allah."

Dart was preparing to travel to Mecca for Hajj:

The documentary finishes with Dart travelling to Mecca to go on pilgrimage, talking about a demonstration called "British Soldiers Can Burn In Hell," planned while he was away.

He was a good Muslim.
